COMPUTER SCIENCE, ENGINEERING, & HEALTHCARE

Whitewater STEM students have the option of pursuing one of the three career pathways. The pathways--including  Computer Science, Engineering, & Healthcare

Computer Science Pathway:

Computer Science is an up-and-coming college and career pathway that is ranked as one of the top 21st Century professions to date. Whitewater High school currently offers the Computer Science pathway; the pathway includes the following: Introduction to Digital Technology, Computer Science Principles, AP Computer Science Principles, and or AP Computer Science A.

Engineering Pathway (Project Lead the Way):

Project Lead the Way is the nation's leading provider of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs. Through a world-class K-12 curriculum, high-quality teacher professional development, and outstanding partnerships, PLTW is helping students develop the skills needed to succeed in the global economy. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, PLTW programs serve WHS students with grant funding for instructional practices in the Engineering pathway. Funding from PLTW allows our students to explore critical skills in the areas of mathematics and science, while crossing curriculum in areas, such as literature, world history, world language, and the fine arts.

Healthcare Pathway:

The Healthcare pathway provides students an opportunity to explore a diverse group of medical fields, including the following: Patient Care Fundamentals, Essentials of Healthcare, and Emergency Responder. Students receive their initial instruction at Whitewater High school; however, as they progress through their selected healthcare pathway, they transition to the Centers of Innovation. The Centers of Innovation ( COI) is one of the Fayette County Board of Education’s premier educational facilities promoting new and innovative learning. COI is a program that supports and prepares young people to be college and career ready by connecting education to economic development. Southern Crescent Technical College has partnered with Fayette County to provide Dual Enrollment courses in Patient Care, Essentials of Healthcare, and Emergency Responder for Whitewater High School students. Additionally, the COI has partnered with Piedmont Fayette Hospital. The hospital provides supplies, guest speakers, and internships for our students.

Academic Pathway:

The Academic Pathway allows for students who want to take several APs to also be in the Academic pathway. The Academic pathway includes anything AP; from AP Human and AP environmental offered to all freshmen; to AP World, AP Art History, and AP Stat offered to sophomores. What AP classes have in common is the rigor of the class. AP classes are varied in subject matter and type of classwork, but the college credit provided through passing the AP exams is very rewarding. The Academic Pathway teaches students the value of hard work and challenges them to be their very best.

Fine Arts Pathway:

The Fine Arts pathway offers students the opportunity to take art courses that correlate with the ‘A’ in the STEM program’s STEAM bus project. From Chorus, Band, and Orchestra to Visual and Theater Arts, STEM offers all of these options. With Chorus, Band, and Orchestra, the student is enrolled in one of the levels of the fine arts classes depending on the student’s proficiency in that field. The student’s grade level does not reflect which level a student would be accepted in. This level is permanent for the year until tryouts for the next year’s class are provided.

Visual Arts consists of specific courses like Drawing & Painting, Design, Ceramics, and many more! These courses allow students to showcase their artistic abilities. Visual Art courses develop imagination, observation, concentration powers, and self-discipline. Students can audition in order to be on the technical crews and shows.
